Federica Cella

Could you tell us about your technique, as freely as you like?

My technique is deeply rooted in the exploration of volume and three-dimensionality. I want the paint to establish a physical presence in the space, subtly inviting the viewer to reach out and touch it.

My goal is to grant substance and relief to the painterly medium itself, celebrating the very tool that allows the painting to exist and transforming it from a mere means into the true protagonist of the artwork.

What does the sky symbolize for you?

In Italian, we are fortunate to use a single word—“tempo”—to signify both chronological time and the weather. My research thrives precisely within this intersection.

I paint skyscapes to capture fleeting moments of time, fragments of life, and universal emotions. For me, the sky has always been a symbol of hope. In my darkest moments, looking up was my way of finding a way out. The sky represents pure possibility, memory, and the enduring presence of the loved ones who are no longer with us.

In your work, the sky seems to “emerge” from within the shape of the brushstroke. How do you balance the brushstroke and the sky within a single piece, in terms of materials and process?

There is an intimate, ongoing dialogue between the shape of the brushstroke and the atmosphere of the sky contained within it. At times I employ sinuous, flowing shapes; at others, sharp, broken strokes that feel like literal tears, either contained within the canvas or spilling over its edges.

My core idea is to enclose the entire painting within the essence of the brushstroke itself. Since an artwork is ultimately built from countless individual gestures, a single brushstroke becomes the fundamental unit of the painting—the atom that holds the entire landscape.

What trial and error, or turning points, led you to your current style?

My artistic path has always been driven by a curiosity for materials. In the past, I chased volume by experimenting with unconventional media, such as expanded polyurethane foam. Every material carries its own unique characteristics and voice, allowing me to tell entirely different stories.

My creative process is defined by trial, error, and continuous fresh starts. More often than not, a piece begins as a vivid conceptual spark in my mind before translating into physical action on the surface.

How do you hope people feel when they stand before your work?

I hope viewers can reconnect with the absolute beauty of nature, which I consider the ultimate form of art and my greatest source of inspiration. I want people standing before my work to physically feel the breath of the air, the warmth of the light, and the motion of the wind.

Ultimately, I hope my paintings strike an internal chord, allowing everyone to relive a personal memory or a dormant emotion. In the end, it all comes down to time—the most precious and profound asset we have.
