Glossy black figures, sculpted like statues. Against minimal, atmospheric backgrounds, bodies twist, arch, embrace, and hold poses so tense they can stop your breath. Kyiv-based Ukrainian artist Murt Burner works primarily in painting, exploring power, control, desire, identity and the tension between vulnerability and dominance. Drawing on the aesthetics of luxury, fashion and subculture, he builds a world where beauty becomes a form of power and perfection carries a quiet unease. Behind the name he gives himself, “Luxury Vandal,” is a personal story of change: from a small provincial town to the gallery.

Your work has a powerful, dark, and luxurious aesthetic. How would you describe your artistic identity and inspirations?
I think of my black sculptural figures as shells, free from external influences, mass culture, education and all the things we absorb as we grow up. By removing these layers, I can focus on one specific feeling, action or pose. I want the viewer to see exactly what I choose to show, without unnecessary distractions.
As for my inspirations, I don’t think I can name just one thing. We’re all shaped by the world around us, by what we see, experience and live through. My visual language is probably a combination of all those things, filtered through my own personality and experience.

The human body plays an important role in your work. What fascinates you about the human form, and what do you express through it?
Right now, I enjoy working with the human body because it allows me to communicate an idea quite directly. We all understand how a body works, what it can do and what feels natural or unnatural. That makes it a powerful way to connect with the viewer.
But I don’t want to limit myself to the human form forever. Tomorrow, it could be an animal, an object or something completely different. What I want to express also changes depending on what’s happening in my life. Sometimes I feel good, sometimes I’m angry, sometimes things are difficult. Each period brings something different into my work.
あなたは自らを「Luxury Vandal(ラグジュアリー・ヴァンダル)」と呼んでいます。 You call yourself a “Luxury Vandal.” What does this mean to you, and how does it reflect your artistic philosophy?
For me, Luxury Vandal represents a transition between who I was and who I am today. I grew up in a small provincial town where the outside world felt distant. If you grew up somewhere similar, you’ll probably understand what I mean. My world was limited, and so was my understanding of art, culture and everything beyond my immediate surroundings.
Back then, my approach was rough, rebellious, messy and very much connected to the street. Over time, I got out of that environment, learned more and changed, not just visually but as a person. I’d like to think I’ve become kinder, more educated and more experienced. My values have changed too. For me, Luxury Vandal describes that journey, from the street to the gallery, without pretending that the person I was before has disappeared.

Your work balances beauty and darkness, elegance and rebellion. What draws you to these contrasts?
I’m drawn to clean lines, smooth surfaces and precise execution. I want to get as close to perfection as I can, and I enjoy it when people can recognize not only the emotion in a painting but also the amount of work and technical skill behind it.
But a perfectly executed image isn’t enough on its own. It also needs character, something that makes it more than just a beautiful object. For me, aesthetics and emotion are inseparable. They have to work together to make the painting feel complete.
I don’t necessarily see my work as dark. If someone sees darkness in it, that’s great. If someone sees something completely different, that’s just as good. I make art for people, not to tell them what to think. Everyone sees a work through their own experience, and I like leaving room for that.
For me, aesthetics and emotion are inseparable.

What do you hope people feel or question when they see your art? Is there something beyond its visual beauty you’d like them to discover?
First of all, I want people to enjoy looking at my work. I care about the visual experience, but I also want the image to create a physical reaction. When someone sees an unusual pose, I like the idea that they might imagine how it would feel to put their own body in that position, perhaps even feel a little discomfort.
Beyond that, I don’t want to prescribe a specific interpretation. I know what I want to show and what I choose to hide, but what someone takes away from the painting is up to them. If one person sees tension, another sees beauty and someone else connects it to their own life, I think that’s a good thing. The work doesn’t need to mean exactly the same thing to everyone.
