Natalia Gasilova

Natalia Gasilova
The Face Dissolves, the Line Holds

Inside paint dragged sideways across the canvas, a face comes undone. Eyes and mouth lose their edges and melt into smears of violet and orange. Yet around the figure runs a single line, drawn with remarkable calm and precision. By placing a dissolving interior and an unwavering contour on the same canvas, Russian painter Natalia Gasilova paints the distance between the image we show and the inner world we carry.

A life spent painting

(Professional Union of Artists of Russia)のメンバーとしても活動している。

Gasilova was born in 2000 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, and now works between Moscow and her hometown. Painting has been part of her life since childhood. She graduated in 2024 with a degree in Easel Painting, and has been a member of the Professional Union of Artists of Russia since 2019.

Her work has been shown in exhibitions in Russia, London, India, Dubai and Kazakhstan, with upcoming presentations planned in Turkey, China and Dubai. In her mid-twenties, her practice is already reaching well beyond national borders.

Sculpture, photographs and frozen time

At the centre of Gasilova’s practice is the relationship between time, nature, memory and human emotion. Her points of departure are classical sculpture and vintage photography.

She approaches them not as mere reference material but as visual traces of memory. A face carved in stone, a figure in a faded photograph: each is a moment frozen in place, still holding the tension of lived human experience.

Fluid pigment and the loss of detail

Her painterly language is defined by fluid pigment, blurred forms and a deliberate loss of detail. Look closely and you see layers of paint pulled in a single direction while still wet, with the weave of the canvas showing through in places. The face is being painted and erased at the same time.

This is her way of examining the instability of perception and the constantly shifting nature of emotional states. Rather than trying to preserve a fixed external image, Gasilova focuses on the moment the visible turns into the experienced.

Not a record of appearance, but the emotional imprint of experience.

The line that holds

Against the dissolving interior, a cream or golden line traces the edge of each figure. The contour barely wavers, cutting the form cleanly out of a black ground or a field of pale pink.

This contrast reflects the central theme of her work: the gap between the complexity of a person’s inner world and the composed image they present to others. Within an outline that looks calm and steady from the outside, hidden emotions, internal turbulence and the continuous transformation of the self are allowed to surface.

Beyond portraiture

Though her paintings centre on faces, Gasilova is not making portraits as a record of how someone looks. What remains on the canvas is the emotional imprint that experience leaves within a person: its depth, its ambiguity and its continuous movement.

Watching colour come apart inside a steady outline, we are reminded how much each of us carries inside while meeting others with a composed face. Natalia Gasilova’s paintings give that unseen turbulence a quiet, visible form.
